“Barry, where’s Barry”? Netflix gives the proposed Live-Action Resident Evil series the greenlight!

Image
As reported last year, the streaming giant, has ordered episodes for a live action treatment of the hugely successful videogame that put the “survival” in horror! The series will be developed by   Constantin Films, you know, the studio responsible for producing the six-film franchise based on the games, while some were ok, most were “beh. Andrew Dabb whose resume includes CW’s popular series, Supernatural, will serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Dabb who is a fan of the videogame series as many of us are says; “’Resident Evil’ is my favorite game of all time,” Dabb said. “I’m incredibly excited to tell a new chapter in this amazing story and bring the first ever ‘Resident Evil’ series to Netflix members around the world. For every type of ‘Resident Evil’ fan, including those joining us for the first time, the series will be complete with a lot of old friends, and some things (bloodthirsty, insane things) people have never seen before.” The Netflix series premise will

Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020) "Long live the King"!!

Image
So, August 28th was a day for many of us to celebrate as it marked two important milestones; Jackie Robinson Day and the Artist/Writer who was responsible for the first Black Superhero of comicdom. Yet, there was a huge downside to all this, as the celebration came to a grinding halt! Last night, I was enjoying a deep sleep until the misses came in with alarming news; Actor Chadwick Boseman most famous for his role as King T'challa aka Black Panther, had passed away due to complications from Colon cancer. He was only 43 years young! This was a deja vu moment since she woke me up about George A Romero's passing. Boseman born in November 29 1976, played iconic roles aside from Black Panther.  His major debut was in 42 in which he played Jackie Robinson, the legendary Baseball player who broke the Baseball color barrier, paving way for so many other black athletes. He brought the soul, swagger and at times, flawed characters of the great James Brown in " Get on Up ". In M

“We don’t need no, interference...” The complicated history of the New Mutants movie!

Image
Wow! After two or more years in release limbo, Fox’s anticipated spinoff set in the X-Men universe, has finally arrived in theaters! Okay, what is left of the theaters since audience participation is expected to be an all-time low thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.  However, when looking at the sorted details of the movie’s problematic past, offers a deeper perspective on studio meddling that may affect the outcome of film production and or lackluster results. It seems that director Josh Boone who co-wrote the Marvel Comics’ live action spinoff, originally had intentions for ‘Mutants to be this hybrid of The Breakfast Club but   featuring Horror elements. And like John Hughes 1985 seminal classic, New Mutants was to be set in the 1980s paying homage by including elements of Breakfast Club, which unfortunately or fortunately depending on your personal preference, was scrapped prior to production. However, according to sources familiar with New Mutants’ production both Boone and his co-

Bop loves Netflix’s Maradona En Sinaloa!

We live in an age in which mediocre people are promoted as the greatest thing ever. It is a very annoying trend with no end. History is being rewritten by liars and cheats and should never be accepted as truth. In my opinion there is a holy trinity of athletes. They are Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan and Diego Armando Maradona. Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan are known all over the world as the best. Diego Armando Maradona is known all over the world as the best football player ever, except for in the US. We are talking football here. Not handegg, but football, also known as soccer in the US. Maradona was a magical player, but probably also the first football player ever who had the deal with the enormous pressure of being the best football player on the planet. Everybody and his sister wanted something from him. If you don’t have the right guidance, or the right environment, that can help you deal with the madness of being a celebrity you are in for a tough life.  These days all kinds o

It Came from 1990: Darkman!

Image
Welcome back to 1990!  The beginning of the 20th Century's end and the start of memorable cinema. Let us look back 30 years ago, whereas 1990 furthered expanded upon high conceptual formulas that the 80's had left behind. Post 1989's Batman , Superhero films, were scarce and still seen as a niche market despite a few "noble" attempts. However, there was one that had unintentionally set the standard for how far the comic based genre can go in cinema. Directed by Horror legend, Sam Raimi of the Evil Dead series of films, Darkman is a homage paying Superhero slash revenge film with Actor Liam Neeson as the film's protagonist, Peyton Westlake, an ambitious scientist working on a device that manufactures artificial  skin tissue capable of covering severe cosmetic damages from burn victims. Peyton feels overly optimistic despite minor setbacks whether it is his prosthetic skin lasting up to 99 minutes, or his Girlfriend Julie Hastings (Frances McDormand of Mississip

Bangkok Knock Out (BKO) 2010 Deserves More Respect!

Image
Action movies are by far my favorite genre. You have them in all sorts and formats. My favorites are the ones that involve foot sandwiches and knuckle sandwiches, a.k.a. martial arts movies. Just when you thought martial arts movies would become stale, various actors from this genre have stepped up brought their a-game! Primary examples: like Scott Adkins, Donnie Yen, Iko Uwais, Tony Jaa, Marko Zaror, Jeeja Yanin, Michael Jai White and Veronica Ngo just to name a few.  When you ask people what they think are some of the best martial arts movies you get titles like Enter The Dragon, Fist Of Fury, Jackie Chan movies, Jet Li movies, The Raid, Ong-Bak, Bloodsport, Undisputed 2-4. However, one movie is NEVER mentioned and that is BKO a.k.a. Bangkok Knock Out. I reviewed Bangkok Knock Out many years ago after it kicked my ass. Fun fact is that this movie was released before The Raid and hardly anyone heard of it! Dealing with a heatwave over here I re-watched it today to see if it still hold

Furie (2019) kicks Bop’s ass!

Image
When you love Hong Kong movies, you know Michelle Yeoh, Angela Mao, Cynthia Rothrock and Zhang Ziyi. When you know non-Hong Kong, but Asian, martial arts movies starring women you also know Jeeja Yanin and Tharoth Sam. Those women are pioneers and make Hollywood “action” women look absolutely fake and useless. Now there is a new girl on the block and her name is Veronica Ngo and damn, can she go! Furie (2019) had been on my list for a while and I never got to it, but now there is a heatwave so I could watch some movies. I did not watch it in time to add it to my best of 2019 list and that sucks, because Furie is one of the best movies of 2019. Furie is a Vietnamese movie. My first Vietnamese movie ever, because the West does not give a shit about movies if they are not from the US/UK, Vietnamese movies don’t get spread over here. The West only gives a shit about non-US/UK movies if there is propaganda in it that suits the US or UK. It is a shame, because every country has something to

Miami Vice: Freefall (Review and retrospective of the series finale.)

Image
Miami Vice finale: Freefall (1989) Directed by Russ Mayberry Reviewer’s note: Originally, I planned on doing a write up last year which was the benchmark of this episode’s 30th anniversary but was either sidetracked or too lazy. So now, here we are. We had one hell of a run, didn't we, partner." That quote pretty much sums it all! 1989, was the bookend of the greatest decade of popular culture. The 1980's was on its way out. But before fading out, there was this finale of yet another great series which defined  this exciting decade: NBC's Miami Vice 1984-1989.  This Crime Drama was innovative on so many levels, be it the implementation of adding rock songs within scenarios,  Jan Hammer's amazing soundtrack, adult subject matter that at times were disturbing,  solid character arcs, the introduction of then unknown actors like Julia Roberts, Bruce Willis and Wesley Snipes just to name a few, the bromance between Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, gorgeous nightlife sc

"What would you prefer, yellow spandex?" X-Men @ 20!

"Mutation: it is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve from a single-celled organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow, and normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward." Can you believe it has been 20 years ago since the debut of Marvel X-men's very own live action film? Personally,  I thought I would never live to see it come to fruition, but after the success of 1998's  Blade , other major motion picture studios knew there were a market for Marvel based films and with this "Renaissance ", came 2000's X-Men. After stewing in development hell for so long, this was the first and obvious choice from Marvel's mainstream titles, especially since X-Men was the most popular Comicbook followed by the venerable animated series and Capcom fighting game. Shocked says no one! Directed by the now notorious Bryan Singer and written by David Hayter (Yes, that
