Superhero Burnout: Is there such a thing?

Image
Decades ago, most comicbook readers wished that there were more faithful adaptations based on their favorite superheroes. Sure, we were treated with the likes of Richard Donner’s Superman, or Tim Burton’s Batman but still we had a long way to go especially in Marvel’s case where there were less than impressive efforts during the 80’s and 90’s until Blade came along and revitalized comicbook cinema with both X-men and Spider-man help paving the way.  In the last decade, the popularity of comicbook films has skyrocketed. However, recent theatrical releases suggest that some moviegoers are feeling superhero fatigue. This phenomenon is characterized by a growing apathy and lack of interest in superhero movies. Some fans and critics have even gone as far as to say that the superhero genre has become stale, repetitive, and formulaic. With so many comic book movies being released each year, it's no wonder that some fans are starting to feel burnt out. But what's causing this fatigue?

The Man who Redefined Horror and Cinema

Hollywood during the early seventies was going through a tumultuous era primarily due to movie studios facing major competition from the world's greatest invention since the wheel-television. During this time when ticket sales were slumping, Blaxploitation films came in and saved mainstream studios who in the case of MGM were tethering on bankruptcy until Shaft. The motion picture industry was in a slump despite having a modicum of success from modest budgeted films like, Owl and the Pussycat, Carnal Knowledge. Badlands, Mean Streets, A Clockwork Orange, Billy Jack, and The French Connection. The latter which was an edge of the seat crime drama thanks to its  groundbreaking  camera work, editing, and iconic car chase scene courtesy of Director William Friedkin. The French Connection’s success is attributed primarily to its accurate and gritty portrayal of crime and police work with an Oscar worthy performance by Gene Hackman as New York narcotics detective, Jimmy "Popeye"

Smoke Near the Water! The Alabama Pier Brawl

There's an ol familiar proverb:  "Some motherfuckers always trying to up skate ice hill." This rings true about a few clowns whose actions during the "first goddamn week of August " to paraphrase RJ Macready, backfired in their faces. And there is no coming back from both the shame and humiliation they experienced.  First off, here was some dumbass influencer Kai Cenat who caused a riot in Union Square New York, with the promise of giving away a few PlayStation 5 consoles and game cards but when he failed to deliver the goods, we'll over a thousand Gen Z punks caused mass disturbance by having the mostly teenage belligerent crowd jumping on vehicles, throwing bottles and punches. Cenat was immediately arrested for inciting unrest after 65 people, which includes 30 juveniles, while others suffered injuries, not limited to bloodied faces.  This is another reason why social media can be very bad, if not used responsibly.  And now we have an incident in Alabama

Did James Gunn Troll Marvel Fans?

Image
Now that the third and final installment of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, has arrived on Disney Plus, how will fans who long anticipated Adam Warlock, react? Here is a quick breakdown of why many were left disappointed and perhaps Director James Gunn, threw us a bone that was hallow as with his interpretation of the Golden Gladiator.

Ret-Conned: How Disney/Marvel Ruined a Poignant Scene from Avengers Endgame!

Image
Recently, Disney has gained tremendous controversy due to one of the most bizarre retcons in cinema history. That ruined the narrative from Avengers Endgame. most of the moviegoing audience and Marvel fans' heartstrings were pulled after watching Tony Stark aka Iron Man making the ultimate sacrifice in order to defeat Thanos. Aside from his wife Pepper, James Rhodes Tony's best friend tried to comfort him as he lays dying. I can't lie about nearly shedding a man tear while watching this very poignant scene and if we have to keep it a buck, Endgame was the swan song to not only Phase 1 but for the most part, the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the succeeding films failed to capture that same magic and appeal as the previous movies from the earlier phases.  Now fast forward to Secret Invasion where Rhodes is an advisor to President Ritson and determined to stop Col. Nick Fury as he holds him responsible for the bombing and Maria Hill's death. However, there's more than m
