So now that the SDCC of 2022 has officially wrapped up, here are the trailers from various media that has all the geeks excited for! It's funny that a Comic book convention is more about promoting films than shilling out Comics, but I digress.
SHAZAM Fury of the Gods
Ok, I'm a big fan of Captain Marvel...er, I meant "SHAZAM!"
The first movie was an enjoyable 2-hour watch which didn't take itself too seriously as in avoiding the nihilist, edgy tropes from the Snyderverse and to an extent, Marvel's Infinity Saga. SHAZAM is a good balance of humor especially when it comes to being self- referential and of course actor Zac Levi brings the laughs as the Super-Man-Child hero.
In this sequel, SHAZAMMY is up against Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso, who are the daughters of the Greek legend, “A" as in Atlas. Yes, the OG Captain Marvel is back with Freddy and the "Marvel Fam" which I can do without the latter, but the great Wizard SHAZAM himself, is back and what's more noticeable, is a brief "cameo" none other than...
Black Adam Trailer 2
You saw a glimpse of the first champion chosen by the Wizard SHAZAM, now Black Adam (The Rock) has a more fleshed out Trailer, as he fights the Justice Society of America, with Aldis Hodge (of John Stewart Green Lantern animated movie and Showtime's compelling crime drama, City on the Hill.) as Hawkman and appropriate casting of Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate being among the standouts. So far, it looks good, but I can do without the hero's journey trope, as I'm sure B A will have a change of heart and becomes the protector of mankind. Blah, blah, blah.
She Hulk: Attorney at Law Trailer 2
Disney Plus has had a great amount of success courtesy or original Marvel based programs for the streaming platform, i.e. Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Wandavision, Loki, Hawkeye, What If and so forth. Now enter the latest entry from the MCU, She Hulk!
From what's shown in the trailer, Jennifer Walter in She Hulk form, is being trained by her cousin Bruce Banner now, Professor Hulk. Jen as a Lawyer has been chosen to represent Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth reprising his role as the Abomination from 2008's Incredible Hulk.) and as if that's not bad enough, a bunch of wannabe Superheroes are running amok. What this series does right, is break the fourth wall as with the comics, and a copious amount of cameo appearances of very familiar faces, especially a certain lawyer by day...
"Enter the Sandman” Here’s The Trailer for Netflix's Sandman
While I'm not that familiar with the source material as in the comics, I know that Mr. Gaiman is one of the best writers of pop culture literature and if there's one thing I can say about this trailer, is that it shows plenty of promise. The phantasmagory imagery alone, has piqued my interest and although it appears slightly epic as in Game of Thrones "epic," The Sandman might pull Netflix from under its slump.
Oh, speaking of Game of Thrones, Gwendolyn Christie formerly known as Brianna of Tarth and Abramverse's Star Wars' Captain Phasma is among the cast.
John Wick Chapter 4
Yes, our favorite Super Assassin is back for another run n gun adventure!
In the fourth installment Wick is seen going up against other assassins and this sequel is throwing in everything that made the franchise so popular, and then some! You have guns, close quarter combat, swordplay and even a doggie! Plus, it stars Martial Arts legend, Donnie Yen and Scott Adkins! Ass-in-Seat, day one for this sequel! Now, if only Chad Stahelski got to direct a sequel to Snake Eyes, no not the Nicholas Cage film, but the Snake Eyes of G.I.Joe!
One can only hope.
And last but certainly not least, is the Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever Trailer.
Okay, as most of us are aware, T'challa is not coming back in any way, shape or form! After the tragic passing of actor Chadwick Boseman, Marvel decided not to go with a new actor to fill in the boots that Boseman left as the Black Panther. But....BUT, judging from the trailer, there's a predictable successor. The movie seems more female centric and I'm not sure this may cater to me as I prefer both strong Black male and female characters. But after the forced scene from Endgame, it seems Marvel is on a track record when it comes to pandering while downplaying black Masculinity. The first Black Panther film featured two strong make characters, so now with both dead, Coogler must have been forced to push a questionable agenda courtesy of Disney, now that the narrative has gone full-on Sistas and barely any Wakandan men are seen, save for M'baku (Winston Duke). Not really a good look from where I'm judging this trailer, especially with Queen Ramonda (Angela Basset) taking up the mantle to the point of going "Queen Leonidas" and as hinted at the end, it's Shuri (Letitia Wright) who shall become the new Black Panther. Well, at least we have Prince Namor. Um, yeah...🤔 While I’m happy to see Angela (Who by all tense and purposes, should have played Ororo Munroe aka Storm in the first X-men films.) return with a more pivotal role, there should have been a male successor of the Panther. Because, "balance!" Fuck, resurrect Killmonger who seen the error of his ways..nah, his death scene was too poetic to bring Michael B. Jordan back. But instead, there’s Shiri and Rhee Willliams who is Ironheart. This is more “Wonder Woman” than “Black Panther.”
This sequel seems more based on the World of Wakanda book by Roxanne Gay, yes that is her actual name. So, that’s all the biggest headlines, what say you?
