Image
And now, Kim’s classic review of Robocop 2!(Originally published from the defunct Supernaughts) In honor of Robocop 2 ’s big 30th, our fellow collaborator and friend from Talkbacker.com and The Supernaughts Kim, has unearthed his review of this underrated sequel that received a less than favorable reception from both film critics and moviegoers. Kim says otherwise, and here’s why!  Robocop 2 (1990) Dir. Irvin Kershner Scr. Frank Miller, Walon Green (Characters by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner) Yes – that’s right; “ Robocop 2 “. Wait. Come back! Let me explain..! Throughout the years I’ve been writing these “1990”-columns every now and then, so far, I’ve been focusing on original movies – not sequels. But…there is no escaping in acknowledging, that one of the aspects of that particular year is that several high-profile sequels DID come out then. Let’s look at the list; “Die Hard 2″, “Predator 2”, “The Godfather part III”, “Back to the Future part III”, “Gremlins 2”, “The Exorcist III”,

It Came from 1990! Robocop 2: "Deuce Machina"!

1990-1999, It was the coined as the bookend of the 20th Century. Whereas the 80's ushered High concept formulas, the 90's was the beginning of “sequelitus": Frequent Sequels of popular film franchises. One of them was 1990's Robocop 2 . OCP was contracted by the state of Detroit, to run police department and adhering to their usual unscrupulous policies, the Omni Consumer Products has cut the salaries and eliminated the pensions of outsourced Police officers. Joel Schumacher 1939-2020

Image
Director Joel Schumacher has died this morning following a year-long battle with cancer at the age of 80. Schumacher was known for directing notable hits throughout the 80's like St. Elmo's Fire, Flatliners and The Lost Boys but went on to further establish his career thanks to A Time to Kill , a high tense racial courtroom drama starring Samuel L. Jackson and Falling Down about a burnt out former employee (Michael Douglas) who goes on a rampage. Despite having a prolific career in film, Joel Schumacher garnered controversy after taking over the Batman films starting with Batman Forever, a decent sequel despite earning less than favorable reviews. However, it was Batman and Robin that ruined his career, where Schumacher implemented a more campier approach that harkens back to the Batman TV series from the 60s costume designs that featured "Bat and then there were "Bat nipples" and close camera "Butt shots". These "creative decisions " was lo

"The Bat Signal is not a beeper"! Batman 4ever @25

1989 was well regarded as the closing year for that decade of Pop culture, the 80's and the year of the Bat as in Batman. Director Tim Burton's success of the iconic DC hero helped to revise modern Superhero cinema which was abandoned long after the horrible Superman Quest for Peace. In 1992, Burton made a follow-up sequel, Batman Returns , a more Gothic albeit darker tone than the first Batman film. Despite its box office earnings and critical reception, Returns was not looked upon too favorably by merchandise tie ins like McDonald's due to the sequel’s horrific imagery and  deep rooted psychological character arcs that would scare kids, preventing them from buying Toy included with Happy Meals. This prompted Warner Brothers to remove Burton as Director from the third Batman film, originally titled Batman Continues. It was Burton who handpicked Joel Schumacher as his successor and what’s even more ironic, Schumacher wanted to do a prequel incorporating ideas based on Frank
